This chapter examines the structure and role of ambiguity in the Japanese Organ Transplant Law by looking at the Chinese Huayen Buddhist doctrine of dharmadhatu-pratityasamutpada or universal dependent “coarising”, a major interpretation of the Buddha's pratityasamutpada, dependent-coarising or interdependence. Specifically, it will examine the nature of ambiguity through the zhuban yuanming jude men or “the attribute of the complete accommodation of principal and secondary dharmas” that Fazang formulated. The early documents depict Gautama’s ascent to Enlightenment in heroic and mythical proportions. Written several centuries after the fact, much of the narrative is no doubt hagiography, embellished by the creative imagination and the hindsight of doctrinal rationalizations. Nonetheless, in sum, the documents chronicle an intensely personal pilgrimage that incorporates and supersedes competing spiritual landscapes. The narrative assumes the primacy of mind and efficacy of mental concentration.

Many Japanese American Buddhist families in the San Jose, California area observe a series of late life celebrations in honor of their elders. The sixty-first, the seven-tieth, the seventy-seventh, and eighty-eighth birthdays are celebrated with special flourish. These celebrations mark milestones in life and underscore the respect and gratitude elders are accorded by the family and community. At these gatherings the talk among family and guests invariably turns to the life of the elder and they wonder how the elder was (...) able to survive and even flourish amid the hard- ships and setbacks during his or her long life. Indeed, long-lived elders do seem to have a presence of being that can only come from many years of living. The idea of kyogai, “one's station in life,” is especially revered in the elder. Ordinarily, kyogai refers to one's place in society. Kyogai also suggests the spiritual maturity of being able to live with equanimity and ease in a transient and interdependent world. For Shiryu Morita, a leading Japanese sho-artist or calligrapher and student of Buddhist thought and practice, kyogai is both a spiritual and an aesthetic quality. I reflect on Morita's notion of kyogai within the context of the Buddha's attitude toward aging and elders. I offer my reflections as a Buddholo- gist interested in elder ethics and as a Buddhist priest concerned with caring for and empowering elders. I begin with a description of the Buddha's attitude toward aging and elders outlined in the Sutta-Nipata, an early Buddhist document. The “Salla Sutta” in the Sutta-Nipata outlines the Buddha's attitude toward old age, elders and elder tasks. Old age is linked to the question of death and the unease of living in a transient world, in the passages cited below.1. (shrink)

The Buddha's method of spiritual release is crystallized in the Four Noble Truths. The Four Truths profile the condition of an individual's life. It explains the cause of suffering, the means through which an individual residing in a transient world can extract oneself from samsara and propel oneself into an abiding spiritual reality or nirvana. This four stage method parallels the principles of diagnosis, etiology, recovery or health, and therapeutics, which are employed by physicians in their clinical practice. In this paper we introduce a general semantic framework that allows us to investigate the notion of inference (...) more carefully. Validity inference and truth inference are in some sense the extremal points in our framework. We investigate the relationship between various types of inference in our general framework, and consider the complexity of deciding if an inference rule is sound, in the context of a number of logics of interest: classical propositional logic, a nonstandard propositional logic, various propositional modal logics, and first-order logic. We consider the issue of what an agent or a processor needs to know in order to know that its messages are true. This may be viewed as a first step to a general theory of cooperative communication in distributed systems. An honest message is one that is known to be true when it is sent (or said). If every message that is sent is honest, then of course every message that is sent is true. In Object and Property, Arda Denkel tries to base metaphysics on perceivable objects—or, rather, to articulate an ontology saying what such particular objects really are. Basically, the world consists of Aristotelian substances, but, for Denkel, substances turn out to be bundles, or “compresences,” of properties, and properties themselves are asserted to be particulars. In the end, everything and everything’s “analytic constituents” are particular: objects are bundles of property occurrences having some necessary unity; pieces of matter are bundles of property occurrences (...) which lack the unity of objects; and, finally, properties are particulars. Denkel’s aim, at least in part, is to avoid any temptation to posit either “mysterious” prime matter or universals. (shrink)

A persistent problem in the dominant agricultural development model is the imposition of technologies without regard to local processes and cultures. Even with the recent shift towards sustainability and agroecology, initiatives continue to overlook local knowledge. In this article we provide analysis of agroecological soil management in the Maya-Achi territory of Guatemala. The Achí, subject to five decades of interventions and development, present an interesting case study for assessing the complementarities and tensions between traditional, generally preventative practices and external initiatives (...) which tend to be curative. Our findings reveal a complex farming system that continues to rely on ancestral knowledge and practices, many of which display a high potential for sustainability and are deeply embedded in local culture. While some new practices have been incorporated into the traditional system, abandonment rates are high, and some extension methods have been paternalistic. The Achí are thirsty for new ideas to help them confront their current, unprecedented challenges. However, future collaborations should be built on existing local knowledge, which has contributed to the development of preventative and restorative practices still in use. Introduced technologies must coincide with local needs and socioecological context in a manner that encourages beneficial synergies, as well as horizontal learning/teaching processes. (shrink)

El concepto de una “trascendencia inmanente” es un tipo de respuesta espiritual que hace lugar para una trascendencia que sea compatible con el bien humano; sin embargo, subyacente a este concepto parece esconderse todavía un recelo por aquello que desborda los límites de la experiencia humana. En medio de este debate, todavía es posible tematizar con Shakespeare y Kant un concepto de trascendencia inmanente que (...) pueda capturar bien aquello que se juega en la subjetividad proteica del mundo moderno, esto es, la posibilidad abierta por ensayar diferentes respuestas de sentido que orientan nuestra actividad práctica. Multiple realizability has been at the heart of debates about whether the mind reduces to the brain, or whether the items of a special science reduce to the items of a physical science. I analyze the two central notions implied by the concept of multiple realizability: "multiplicity," otherwise known as property variability, and "realizability." Beginning with the latter, I distinguish three broad conceptual traditions. The Mathematical Tradition equates realization with a form of mapping between objects. Generally speaking, x realizes (or (...) is the realization of) y because elements of y map onto elements of x. The Logico-Semantic Tradition translates realization into a kind of intentional or semantic notion. Generally speaking, x realizes (or is the realization of) a term or concept y because x can be interpreted to meet the conditions for satisfying y. The Metaphysical Tradition views realization as a species of determination between objects. Generally speaking, x realizes (or is the realization of) y because x brings about or determines y. I then turn to the subject of property variability and define it in a formal way. I then conclude by discussing some debates over property identity and scientific theory reduction where the resulting notion of multiple realizability has played a central role, for example, whether the nonreductive consequences of multiple realizability can be circumvented by scientific theories framed in terms of narrow domain-specific properties, or wide disjunctive properties. Resuelta evidente la desigualdad que ha develado la crisis sanitaria a nivel global. Sin embargo, no se trata de una fotografía actual, sino que ha puesto de manifiesto las falencias estructurales del sistema económico político global y, con ello, los devastadores efectos sobre el ser humano en todas sus dimensiones. Las consecuencias de la pandemia no son homogéneas dentro de una misma sociedad. Existen sectores que se han vuelto más ricos y otros más pobres. Las distancias en salud, bienestar y (...) dignidad de los individuos han aumentado y estamos ante una crisis de que esta injusticia se siga calcificando. El ser humano no sólo tiene que sobrevivir sino lograr la fundamental biopsicosocial realización tanto individual como colectiva. Por lo tanto, es imperativo, recuperar al Otro, al necesitado, dentro del discurso y, sobretodo, en la acción política, mirando al Otro como un fin en sí mismo, y no como un medio. Este es el origen y debe volver a ser la finalidad primordial de la política interna y externa de cada gobierno. Para ello, la reflexión filosófica nos proporciona nuevas perspectivas para reestructurar la realidad, cambiando, y mejorando, las escalas de valores y nuestro modo de actuar. La pospandemia nos plantea un único objetivo, el restaurar y reactivar las verdaderas relaciones intersubjetivas, rehumanizando al hombre, es decir, volviendo a la raíz de la esencia de toda sociedad, que no es otra que el ser humano mismo, como un fin en sí mismo. No se podrá lograr de manera inmediata, por lo tanto es fundamental recanalizar todas las herramientas e instituciones políticas hacia y para el bienestar del hombre, sin devastar su entorno, donde la reflexión filosófica es primordial para construir un nuevo mundo. RESUMEN Durante el siglo XVII, el reloj parece el modelo más adecuado para pensar los seres vivos. El filósofo alemán G. W. Leibniz es parte de la tradición mecanicista que concibe los seres vivos a partir del modelo del reloj o de los autómatas, pero establece una distinción esencial entre máquinas naturales y artificiales, que muestra los límites de este modelo. Las primeras son máquinas infinitamente complejas, máquinas dentro de máquinas ad infinitum, las segundas no, alcanzan un límite de complejidad. (...) Esta distinción obliga a ir más allá del reloj como modelo de los seres vivos, pues este modelo resulta insuficiente para comprender la dinámica propia de los seres vivos, en al menos dos aspectos: a) deja sin explicar el origen de la estructura o forma del ser vivo; b) no establece un principio interno de actividad que fundamente la unidad dinámica y estructural del ser vivo. Con su noción de organismo o máquina natural, Leibniz intenta resolver estas insuficiencias del modelo puramente mecánico: a) en su propuesta el ser vivo no se constituye de manera mecánica o serial, sino de una vez, por un acto de creación; b) la conservación del ser vivo en el tiempo sólo es comprensible a partir de un principio de actividad intrínseca que dota de unidad, actividad y estructura al viviente. ABSTRACT During the seventeenth century, the clock seems the most appropriate model for thinking about living beings. The German philosopher G. W. Leibniz, is part of the mechanical tradition that conceives living beings from the clock or the automata’s model, but he establishes an essential distinction between natural and artificial machines. This distinction shows the limits of the mechanical model. The machines of nature are infinitely complex machines, machines within machines ad infinitum; the artificial machines, instead, reach a limit of complexity. This distinction forces us to go beyond the clock as a model of living beings, because this model is insufficient to understand the dynamics of living beings, in at least two aspects: a) it is not able to explain the origin of the living being’s structure or form; b) it does not establish an internal principle of activity grounding the living being’s dynamic and structural unit. With his notion of organism or natural machine, Leibniz tries to solve these insufficiencies of the purely mechanical model: a) in his proposal, the living being is not constituted mechanically or serially, but at once, by an act of creation; b) the conservation of the living being in time is only understandable from a principle of intrinsic activity that provides unity, activity and structure to living beings. In this paper we provide some keys for understanding the cryptic essay “Karl Kraus” by Walter Benjamin. For this purpose, we highlight the Kraus’s importance for the journalistic and political criticism that Benjamin was interested in, we introduce the reader to the three parts of the essay and we make a brief reflection on the construction of the concept of critique in Benjamin based on the work of Kraus.

Este artículo busca comprender las relaciones e intercambios entre filosofía y ciencia, analizando un caso concreto: el uso que hace Bergson del argumento de Boltzmann contra la reversibilidad o recurrencia del universo (“paradoja de Zermelo”), apoyando indi- rectamente su concepción de la irreversibilidad del universo asentada en un élan vital. Criticamos que Bergson, en su interpretación, convierta en “imposibilidad absoluta” lo que Boltzmann asienta sólo como “imposibilidad práctica”. Mostraremos que el filósofo francés distorsiona el argumento, dejando de lado dos puntos (...) fundamentales: a) la particular posición epistemológica de Boltzmann respecto a las teorías científicas y su relación con la experiencia, b) el atomismo que sirve de base al argumento de Boltzmann, atomismo que Bergson rechaza. Concluiremos que el argumento de Boltzmann no es válido en el marco metafísico (epistemológico y ontológico) de Bergson. Esto contribuirá a una mejor comprensión de los problemas que surgen en los intercambios conceptuales entre ciencia y filosofía. (shrink)

Este ensayo analiza una salida al dilema de si los jueces deben o pueden ser filósofos. A partir de una valoración de los dramáticos asuntos que deben resolver los jueces, y que inevitablemente los remiten a cuestiones filosóficas, se sustentará que es válido pensar que pueden ser lo suficientemente filósofos como para aliviar el punto nodal del dilema. En el proceso de toma de decisiones los jueces afrontan problemas, especialmente en las áreas del derecho público, que requieren juicios sobre cuestiones (...) morales polarizantes que son objeto de un profundo y continuo estudio y confrontación filosóficas. Se concluye con un consejo a los jueces: sean sinceros respecto al papel que los conceptos filosóficos realmente juegan, tanto en el diseño general como en los exquisitos detalles de nuestra estructura jurídica, y sean realistas sobre el duro trabajo que afrontarán para cumplir la promesa de esos conceptos. Este texto analiza el caso Citizens United v. FEC en el que la Suprema Corte de los Estados Unidos, en decisión dividida, reconoció un derecho constitucional de las corporaciones a gastar de manera ilimitada en comerciales televisivos electorales. Por un lado, se revisan los precedentes judiciales más importantes respecto a los límites de la participación financiera e ideológica de las empresas en el contexto electoral. Por el otro, también da cuenta del contexto conservador existente en la Suprema Corte norteamericana al (...) momento de dictarse la sentencia y del impacto que tiene, en términos prácticos, el hecho de que las corporaciones cuenten ahora con semejante derecho. Implement the concept of political discussions in the context of Hispanic American philosophy will lead to the analysis of the concept of stupidity. What is meant by political idiocy? How is it consolidated? If philosophy pretends to display the different ways in which politics is involved in the definition of human beings and its culture, must begin by exploring the mechanisms that serves the dominant political discourse in America to guarantee the total absence of critical thinking.

Con el objetivo de evidenciar la forma en que la diversidad sociodemográfica ha resignificado el proceso de desarrollo territorial y origina líneas de fuga que trascienden la hegemonía de los poderes económicos-políticos-ambientales en los Llanos-Orientales, se realiza una metodología experimental que combina análisis situacionales, la genealogía, y la reconstrucción histórica de fenómenos sociales a través de 87 entrevistas a líderes sociales entre el 2019-2021. Los resultados muestran un territorio de activa conexión cultural que favorecen la lucha contra hegemónica dentro de (...) las metáforas de “el mito del Estado nación” y “la imposibilidad de generar alternativas”. El análisis expone la existencia de rebeliones de conducta a través de resistencias cotidianas creativas, políticas y culturales, que favorecen el poder de la confianza, la solidaridad, la cooperación, el afecto, así como los liderazgos colectivos. Se concluye que el poder central no tiene la capacidad de capturar estas resistencias ya que no tiene la potencia analítica para percibir la reconfiguración del espíritu humano ni las variaciones del tejido social. En este artículo, analizo dos estrategias para diseñar especies con fines de conservación, la des-extinción y la genética dirigida. Sostengo que el uso de la ingeniería genética con fines de conservación no es, en principio, incorrecto. Puede haber casos en que la des-extinción de especies y la ingeniería genética dirigida sean preferible a otras estrategias disponibles para la conservación. También sostengo que la des-extinción no es una técnica de conservación tan transformadora como podría parecer en primera instancia. Considerada como actividad (...) de conservación, se fundamenta en gran medida en prácticas de conservación tradicionales, como los programas de cría en cautiverio, la reintroducción de especies y la restauración y protección del hábitat. En contraste, la genética dirigida tiene el potencial de reestructurar significativamente la forma cómo se enmarcan y abordan los problemas de conservación. La genética dirigida es, por lo tanto, una tecnología mucho más disruptiva para la filosofía y la práctica de la conservación. (shrink)

En el presente trabajo intentaremos demostrar cómo el ejercicio filosófico de Platón se sustenta en la utilización de imágenes. En este sentido partimos de la idea de que las imágenes utilizadas por el filósofo en la República dan forma al contenido del diálogo. A su vez, estas imágenes están en función de la teoría de la Línea expuesta hacia la mitad del diálogo y se articulan en tres ejes según un aspecto de la realidad que se quiere destacar. A estas (...) imágenes las llamaremos impresionistas, realistas o románticas para acudir a la terminología propia de la estética del siglo XIX por ofrecernos rasgos definitorios que nos permitirán identificar los diversos usos de las imágenes en Platón. En este artículo se analizan las relaciones entre arte, tecnología y cuerpo, teniendo como marco de análisis el pensamiento del filósofo español Félix Duque. En primer lugar, consideramos la concepción del cuerpo como máquina y su derivación actual en la noción de cyborg. En segundo lugar, mostramos cómo la concepción del cuerpo-máquina se hace parte del body art de Stelarc y del arte carnal de Orlan, quienes plantean el diseño del cuerpo dada su obsolescencia. En tercer lugar, presentamos las críticas (...) de Duque a estos ciberartistas y en general a los planteamientos transhumanistas y posthumanistas. Finalmente, comparamos la metáfora del «cyborg» en Broncano con la «filosofía de la técnica de la naturaleza» de Duque, poniendo de relieve la necesidad de plantear y explicitar la cuestión política implícita en el diseño del cuerpo y la «libre creación». En el presente trabajo se efectúa un acercamiento a la narrativa cubana del período decimonónico por medio del diseño de sus personajes femeninos. Se atiende a las particularidades de la caracterización prosopográfica y etopéyica de la imago mujer, y se realiza una tentativa de tipologización, de acuerdo con los diversos matices conformadores de nuestros modelos femeninos ficcionales. En este propósito se privilegian aquellas obras y autores más importantes del período. In this paper, an approach to the Cuban narrative of nineteenth-century (...) period is carried out through the design of their female characters. The paper discusses the particularities of an ethopoeic characterization of imago women. It also attempts to realize a tentative typologization, based on the various nuances of forming our fictional female models. For this purpose, the works and major authors of the period are discussed. It has generally been assumed that rapid visual search is based on simple features and that spatial relations between features are irrelevant for this task. Seven experiments involving search for line drawings contradict this assumption; a major determinant of search is the presence of line junctions. Arrow- and Y-junctions were detected rapidly in isolation and when they were embedded in drawings of rectangular polyhedra. Search for T-junctions was considerably slower. Drawings containing T-junctions often gave rise to very slow search even (...) when distinguishing arrow- or Y-junctions were present. This sensitivity to line relations suggests that preattentive processes can extract 3-dimensional orientation from line drawings. A computational model is outlined for how this may be accomplished in early human vision. (shrink)

À quoi bon la pensée? Pour de nombreux chercheurs, inspirés par les théories évolutionnistes, la pensée réfléchie est utile à notre espèce. Elle lui confère des avantages importants et contribue à son succès reproductif. Pourtant ses avantages ne sont pas si évidents. La pensée ne figure ni dans les mécanismes de l'évolution qui ont façonné la vie, ni parmi les procédés dont se servent la plupart des organismes pour s'y maintenir. Dans Évolution et rationalité, Ronald de Sousa montre que, (...) pour comprendre les avantages de la pensée réfléchie, il faut changer nos présupposés relatifs à la rationalité et reconnaître la multiplicité de ses dimensions. La rationalité ne nous sert pas seulement à avoir des croyances vraies et à agir de manière efficace dans un environnement changeant. Elle nous aide à gérer nos plaisirs et nos peines dans le temps et nous permet d'envisager des situations qui n'existent pas. En général, le statut de la rationalité comme ensemble de capacités ayant évolué dans le cours de l'histoire naturelle de notre espèce, passant des tropismes aux désirs et de la détection à la représentation, n'a pas été pris suffisamment au sérieux. Suivre ce processus d'évolution de la rationalité permet de comprendre comment elle est devenue une norme, mais aussi pourquoi il lui arrive aussi souvent d'échouer. Ronald de Sousa a profondément modifié nos façons de concevoir les émotions. Avec Évolution et rationalité, il pourrait avoir une influence aussi décisive sur nos façons de concevoir la rationalité. RESUMEN En este texto proponemos que el fundamento de la teoria mimética de René Girard, que le permitió construir una "antropología fundamental", se puede encontrar en el realismo estético. Expondremos algunas notas características de la relación mimética, para luego poder postular que Girard se opone no solo a la mentira romántica que evita aceptar la mimesis como elemento estructurador del deseo, sino también al falseamiento impresionista que oculta la violencia fundadora de las sociedades. Para esto, analizaremos su teoría de la (...) violencia mimética en dos de sus más importantes libros: Mentira romántica y verdad novelesca y La violencia y lo sagrado, y la expondremos de cara a los conceptos del Romanticismo, el Realismo y el Impresionismo, tomados de la historia del arte y la literatura. Por último, haremos una breve mención a la ausencia de evidencia empírica, como crítica a la antropología fundamental girardiana, para concluir que tal proceder no impide hablar de un realismo en esta teoría. ABSTRACT In this text, we propose that the basis of René Girard's mimetic theory, which allowed him to construct a "fundamental anthropology", can be found in Aesthetic Realism. We will expose some characteristic notes of the mimetic relation, to then be able to postulate that Girard opposes not only the romantic lie, which avoids accepting mimesis as a structuring element of desire but also the impressionistic falsification that hides the founding violence of societies. For this, we will analyze his theory of mimetic violence in two of his most important books, Romantic lie & romanesque truth [Deceit, Desire and the Novel: Selfand Other in Literary Structure] and Violence and the Sacred, and we will expose it facing the concepts of Romanticism, Realism and Impressionism, taken from the history of art and literature. Finally, we will briefly mention the absence of empirical evidence, as a criticism of Girardian fundamental anthropology, to conclude that this does not prevent us from speaking of realism in this theory. La termodinámica clásica establece una oposición irreducible entre vida y materia. El universo dibujado por ella tiende de manera irreversible, debido a una continua disipación de energía, a un estado de equilibrio o reposo, la llamada «muerte térmica». En este universo, la vida, su actividad y su evolución aparecen como externas y fortuitas, permitidas, pero no explicadas por las leyes de la termodinámica. La vida aparece casi anti-natural o milagrosa en un universo muerto o en vías de morir. El filósofo (...) francés Henri Bergson intenta superar esta contraposición de vida y materia con su concepción de un universo en continua creación conducido por un élan vital. Este impulso vital es fundamento tanto de la vida como de la materia, y la organización de los seres vivos y su evolución, la evolución creadora, necesitan de ambos principios para su concreción. Sin embargo, la propuesta de Bergson no logra establecer una verdadera unidad de vida y materia. Mantiene la dualidad de estos principios, a pesar de su complemento, y deja sin responder por ejemplo cómo es posible el surgimiento de la vida a partir de la propia materia. Classical thermodynamics establishes an irreducible opposition between life and matter.
